PARISIAN MACAO RESORT FEATURES SCHINDLER PRODUCTS
The Parisian Macao Sands Resort opened in September in Cotai on the southern coast of China, featuring an array of Schindler vertical-transportation equipment, Jardine Schindler Group announced. The system includes 87 elevators and 48 escalators, including a pair of specially designed high-speed, high-traffic 7000 elevators for the Parisian Macao's half-scale Eiffel tower. Those elevators transport visitors 100 m to a 37th-floor observation deck in approximately 40 s. The system also includes 40 additional 7000 and 39 compact 5500 elevators, and 48 9300AE escalators serving a resort with 3,000 guest rooms, more than 170 stores, French-inspired streetscapes and a 1,200-seat theater.
806 ESCALATORS FOUND UNSAFE IN MALAYSIA
Malaysia's Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) found that out of 7,632 escalators inspected in shopping malls and public places, 806 were unsafe, FMT News reports. Owners were advised by DOSH to repair or replace the units under the "Safe Escalator Campaign." According to the Factories and Machinery Act of 1967, all escalators must have their designs approved by DOSH prior to installation, be tested before being issued a machinery qualification certificate and undergo regular maintenance by a firm or individual approved by DOSH. After 15 months, an escalator is again tested by DOSH. The move came in the wake of a mishap at a shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur on October 25 in which an escalator’s metal plates became detached, scaring shoppers and shopkeepers but resulting in no injuries.
PRICE OF ESCALATORS OVER LAS VEGAS AVENUE DISPLEASES
Sixteen new escalators to pedestrian bridges over Tropicana Avenue in Las Vegas will cost an additional US$419,573, and the Nevada Transportation Board is unhappy with the rising costs associated with the overall US$30-million project that has been in the works since 2003, the Las Vegas Sun reports. The Las Vegas Convention Center is funding US$19 million of the project, with the state Department of Transportation funding the rest. The general contractor initially gave a lower price estimate before realizing the lower-cost new escalators were not compatible with the project. The new units are being ordered from Otis.
