To gain an insight into the power dynamic in Saudi and how the pressure it exerts plays out in the Instagram space, I am interviewing three different age groups. Jana, a 14-year-old young teenage woman studying at Faisaliah School tells us about how she has adapted to her Instagram space.

Part 2: The Power Dynamic with Jana Aljandan

My podcast will discuss the interplay between conservative Saudi nationalists who want to maintain a traditional picture of femininity strongly linked to notions of piety and deference, the group in a higher power (males like husbands and fathers) controlling the image the female portrays on her Instagram; and the Saudi women who are vigorously questioning these longstanding views of how women should behave in society through social media. The national public image of Saudi women is being modernized by micro-Saudi women influencers involved in the Instagram platform. I find that these women’s engagement with social media is having an impact on younger Saudi women and challenging traditional values and norms and performing a vanguard role in reimagining the public national image of Saudi women today.
