David Pepose is a writer who’s been making some serious waves in the comic book industry over the past several years. Recently he’s been working on comic book adaptations of classic animated characters (Space Ghost, Captain Planet, Speed Racer), he’s worked on Marvel comic properties (The Savage Avengers, Cable: Love and Chrome), and has created his own independently produced series (The Devil That Wears My Face, Scout’s Honor). With all that incredible output of work, there was one segment of the comics business that he hadn’t touched on yet: the all ages/kids’ market. It’s out of that desire to have a comic that would be OK for little kids to read that his latest book, Ten-Ton Titan Terrier was born. Jibola Fagbamiye is a Nigerian born artist who was obsessed with bringing the story of Afrobeat founder and political activist Fela Kuti to life in the pages of a graphic novel. After workshopping the idea on his own, he decided he needed some help putting the finishing touches on the project so he contacted his friend Conor McCreery (Kill Shakespeare, The Last Witch). Together they ended up creating Fela-Music is the Weapon (on sale October 7th), a fantastic sequential art biography which offers a full and multilayered look at Kuti’s rise from obscurity to becoming a groundbreaking musician and resistance figure. This week on the Part-Time Fanboy podcast, Kristian chats with Jibola and Conor about how they came to work together, why they thought Fela’s life was worth exploring in the pages of a comic book, and how they ended up creating a book that Kristian thinks is the rare work that transcends the medium of comics.

Phil Mucci is the multimedia creator who is one of the masterminds behind the Diabolik Double Feature…a gorgeous genre blending magazine sized publication that features two terrific horror tales: Orgy of the Blood Freaks and Gringo Loco. Orgy of the Blood Freaks is a Scooby Doo meets Russ Meyer style romp featuring quirky paranormal investigator Professor Dario Bava. Gringo Loco is a Frankenstein-like Sergio Leone homage, featuring a walking corpse out for revenge in the Old West. Mucci just recently published the second edition of the Diabolik Double Feature and on this episode of the Part-Time Fanboy podcast Kristian chats with him about the creation of his tribute to the Warren Publishing horror magazines of days gone past. They talk about the unique flip book aspect of his publication, his thought process behind combining two different kinds of stories into one book, and how he may split them up into their own comics in the future.

This week Part-Time Fanboy returns to Scotland to chat with one of their favorite cartoonists, Chris Baldie! Baldie has been responsible for some really fun books like Jacques and the Great Art Theft, Rolled a One, and We Said Goodbye to Gravity. He recently returned to one of his early comic book creations, Space Captain: Captain of Space, on Kickstarter to publish the series into one collected trade paperback. On this episode of the podcast, Kristian chats with Baldie about how he became the artist on Space Captain, how he was able to fit making comics into his life while being an animator and designer at his day job, and how he developed his wonderful cartooning style over the years.

Ian Rosenberg is a First Amendment lawyer whose children became inspired to engage in protest action after the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Because of this, Rosenberg found himself in the position of explaining to his kids what their speech protections were and what punitive action their school could take against them if they chose to walk out of school in solidarity with the March for Our Lives protesters. Having already written the book The Fight for Free Speech: Ten Cases That Define Our First Amendment Freedoms, Ian saw the need to develop a resource for younger readers so they could understand their own First Amendment rights. Paired with Eisner nominated artist Mike Cavallaro, the two of them set out to create The Free Speech Handbook: A Practical Framework for Understanding Our Free Speech Protections, a book which Kristian considers to be one of the most important graphic novels published in the past several years.
