The essence of discipleship is Jesus saying “Follow me”, not us saying “Jesus, follow me.” And yet much of what passes as “The Christian life” looks much like the latter...us asking Jesus to ride shotgun along with us, just in case we need him while we pursue our own aims. But nothing could be further from the essence of discipleship.
