In the Housing in Aotearoa: 2020 report released at the end of 2020 by Stats NZ. Census data shows that homeownership peaked in the 1990s at 74 percent and by 2018 had fallen to 65 percent of households, the lowest rate since 1951.
The decline in homeownership has occurred unevenly, with greater falls for Māori and Pacific peoples, and in the Auckland region in particular.
