US and allied troops start their withdrawal from Afghanistan in July. The Afghan political transition will be complete, and it's time for US President Obama to think about his legacy. And if the eight years of the Bush Presidency proved anything, it's that there is no better way to leave a legacy than by withdrawing from a war.
Whether you want to admit it or not, the American involvement in Afghanistan is going badly. As Iraq showed, nothing can be concluded from a single skirmish – the famous routing of the Taliban by Gen. Rashid Dostum near Mazar-i-Sharif – but this doesn't look like a one-off. If there were ever a good reason for a US withdrawal from Afghanistan, now would be it.
