Publisher's Summary:
Jeffrey Archer's Paths of Glory is the story of such a man - George Mallory. Born in 1886, he was a brilliant student who became part of the Bloomsbury Group at Cambridge in the early twentieth century and served in the Royal Garrison Artillery during World War I. After the war, he married, had three children, and would have spent the rest of his life as a schoolteacher, but for his love of mountain climbing.
Mallory once told a reporter that he wanted to climb Mt. Everest, "because it is there." On his third try in 1924, at age 37, he was last seen 400 feet from the top. His body was found in 1999, and it remains a mystery whether he and his climbing partner, Andrew Irvine, ever reached the summit.
In fact, not until you've heard the last words of Archer's extraordinary novel will you be able to decide if George Mallory should be added to that list of legends, while another name would have to be removed. Paths of Glory is truly a triumph.

While this was a historical novel, I believe it was generally accurate.
For the most part I only read non-fiction adventure, however this was a nice change and I would recommend it for those interested in George Mallory and his attempt on Everest.

Interesting reading but I knew how it would end as soon as I read the Preface.
Interesting quasi-historic recounting of George Mallory's attempts to be the first to conquer Mt Everest. I say "quasi" because other authors have beaten his path, but with less drama.
I would recommend this book to all lovers of Jeffrey Archer as ...
As with all Jeffrey Archer books, this one is a gripping read. It was fascinating that it is based on a true story. The factual elements of the story in terms of the challenges the climbers experienced and the lack of modern equipment was very interesting. I would recommend this book to all lovers of Jeffrey Archer as well as lovers of a good story well told.
Paths of Glory
This is an astonishing novel based on real people and actual history. It is hard reading at times because of the details needed for the explanation of the motivation driving mountain climber Mallory to risk his life on such a dangerous undertaking. It is also important to understand the wonderful family he had behind him. It is also important to understand the bureaucratic obstacles he had to overcome. It is also an illuminating study of British manners and behavior. It will be liked by readers who enjoy history and the sport of mountain climbing.
Historical fiction ... excellent.
This is a work of historical fiction. A true event in history with a fictional plot wrapped around it. In this case, the first ascent of Mt. Everest by the Englishman, George Mallory.
The novel opens with a team finding a body on the slopes of Everest and one of the team members searching inside the clothing of the body looking for a picture of Mallory's wife. Mallory always climbed with a picture of his wife in his jacket pocket. Upon finding no picture, the prologue ends there and the novel begins. Note, the finding of no picture doesn't mean this isn't Mallory. (pure Archer)
Jeffrey Archer can hold my attention like no other author. I'm immersed by the end of the first chapter and held there until the turn of the final page.
