In today’s episode, we will be focusing on an idiom, “in the can.”
Today’s use of “in the can” is a film industry expression. In the pre-digital days of shooting motion pictures, movies were shot, edited, and ultimately delivered to theaters in canisters that held spooled reels of film. Putting a movie “in the can” meant that it was completed and ready for release and distribution.
I first heard the expression from physicians talking about medical presentations or lectures. A talk in the can is one that is already prepared and ready for delivery to give at any time.
A good talk should live on and on. A good presentation should by given again. Good information can and should be delivered over and over.
See one, do one, teach one should be see one, do one, teach many.
Through the power of the internet we have the ability to allow that presentation and other forms of it to live on and on. Slideshare, YouTube, instragram, and our business or personal websites or social media are just a few of the places where those things can live. There are more. I have used the Vidscrip platform for several years now as an experiment in producing video content.
Here is the rub. Most of us urologist don’t know HOW. When I talk to my partners about creating a Vidscrip or a youtube page I see fear or a blank stare because of the unknown.
If urologists want to turn see one do one teach one into see one, do one, into see one, do one, teach many then we must learn to harness the tools we have now at our fingertips and mousepads to distribute information to a wider audience online.
Listen in to find inspiration to get started.
