Patrimony

Listen Later

Fear not. Do not let that word scare you,🤭
Patrimony simply means what can be inherited. I was reflecting on the state of the Country and I remember hearing somewhere, that "the compromise of a generation becomes the standard of another." This was said in light of what happened in the 70s after the Oil Boom in Nigeria. The discovery of oil brought so much wealth to the nation that an Excess Crude oil account was created to keep funds that are in excess after expending on the National budget.
The story had it that from the wealth the Oil brought to Nigeria, good roads, hospitals and schools were constructed. We've heard some of old lecturers tell us that jobs were waiting for them immediately after school. That they go to school without beddings or cooking utensils as the University had provision for such.
One of the tales we heard is that one person was entitled to a chicken and students went on strike when it became two persons to one chicken.
But what happened?
The economy was doing well and so was the country. So, Public Servants started stealing funds from the Excess account. Since it wasn't "harming" any sector of the country, after all, everything is moving fine, the syphoning of public funds went unpunished.
Fast forward to when other Nations in the globe had Oil discoveries and Nigeria was no longer the 'Poster Child of Oil,' the theft continue only now, with reverberating effect.
Since the theft was done with impunity, no sanction has helped, ever. It has been a downward spiral ever since with Public Servants stealing even the money that Nigeria doesn't have.
