In Severed Conscience we were struck by the words of Orlando Orlando Gutierrez-Boronat.  As a refugee from communist Cuba, he explained the appeal of giving up your freedom for power, and how some are satisfied with the ability to affect others directly.  As we saw during Covid, people horrifyingly became part of the “Mask Up We Are In This Together Brigade” and took it upon themselves to enforce government lockdown rules, enthusiastically.

As we near the 2024 election, we see the same appeal being made by Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson when she calls for citizens to report election misinformation.  Training materials and a hotline are available for anyone to report social media posts where the veracity of the information can not be determined.  The Detroit Free Press has established an online database of misinformation.  People are encouraged to report any items that may qualify as harmful to elections.

This is a replay of the informant culture nurtured during the Covid crisis, all in the name of protecting democracy while controlling information.  Is this the behavior of a free republic or of fearful dictators?
