Paul Chambers: Serial rapist Malcolm Rewa to contest third trial for murder of Susan Burdett
Malcolm Rewa is expected to contest a decision that would allow him to be tried a third time for the murder of Susan Burdett.
The serial rapist has been tried twice for the crime, but neither jury was able to reach a verdict.
However, Rewa was convicted of her rape.
His lawyer Paul Chambers told Mike Hosking he's hoping to speak to his client today but expects he will ask him to try to block another trial.
He says he will be arguing on the basis of time, witness evidence and the findings of the Privy Council in the Teina Pora decision.
"They made some findings on Mr Pora's confession and on his mental state and in doing so they made some certain observations around the offending that took place."
