Tanya Short is the captain of upcoming Canadian studio Kitfox Games. Their first release Shattered Planet began to scratch at the surface of what Tanya and her team want to communicate through games. Now they are hard at work on the upcoming title Moon Hunters.
Moon Hunters wants you to build your mythology. "How will you be remembered," is something of a tag line for the game. Tanya and I spoke about ancient mythologies and the pros and cons to procedural generation versus hand crafted experiences and how those all relate. There is something mystical about walking amongst the ruins of ancient civilizations and contemplating why was this built here, and for what purpose did it all serve. Tanya is also no stranger to tabletop RPGs, and we discussed how character building is such an integral part of that experience. But the question how does one translate that experience into a video game where the rules are much more rigid than a free flowing conversation around a table.
We also spoke briefly about the Square Enix Collective, and how that has helped them signal boost awareness about the game. How to increase awareness for your game is now the common indie dev struggle, it is awesome to see companies like Square Enix find ways to throw their weight around, much like how Activision just restarted Sierra.
I am excited to see where Moon Hunters goes, as it's Kickstarter is wrapping up and doing so in magnificent fashion. There is still time to throw in on this upcoming game that is looking to allows its players to build their own mythology. Hopefully we can convince Tanya to come back for the show proper, and maybe we can catch up on what each others tabletop characters are up to.
Oh and the music is being done by none-other than Ryan 'DualRyan' Roth and Halina Heron, who last collaborated on the Yawhg soundtrack.
