I think he see’s China’s Xi through a similar lens and that is why he’s guarded when he discusses if the US will defend Taiwan if China attacks them. He wants to keep the peaceful pathway open in our relationship. The President Trump has proven that tariff leverage can be used by a president to stop or prevent wars, bring jobs and investment to the US, and to open overseas markets.
