In the midst of our chaotic, overscheduled lives—especially during the Christmas season—we're invited to explore a profound paradox: how can we experience genuine peace when everything around us feels anything but peaceful? This message takes us deep into Psalm 85, a lament psalm that reveals the secret to finding peace not in our circumstances, but in our pursuit of righteousness. The psalmist looks back at God's faithfulness in Israel's history and pleads for restoration, anchoring hope in a powerful promise: God will speak peace to His people. But here's the transformative insight—peace isn't about having a calm environment or a cleared calendar. It's about walking in righteousness, doing the right thing even when it's hard, and keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, who is Himself the embodiment of peace. Isaiah captures it perfectly: the result of righteousness is peace, described as a 'quiet confidence forever.' When we see Joseph's response to Mary's pregnancy—choosing righteousness over cultural expectations—we witness this principle in action. The beauty is that we don't have to be perfect; like Abraham, when we believe God and faithfully pursue His way, He counts it as righteousness. This means that even in life's storms, even when we face hardship or uncertainty, we can experience that peace that surpasses understanding. It's possible right now, in whatever situation we're facing, to feel the deep peace of Christ washing over us as we walk in His way.
