This episode is all about people. We see peers as a close knit group of individuals who are likely to share some or most of our own ideals. Sometimes our peers may not be much like us at all, but what they offer is a unique contrast to a lifestyle within our comfort zone.
Tim breaks down the various categories of peers, friends, and acquaintances using the friendship peer-a-mid. Jordan asks, why would a capable individual keep "low quality friends"? (You'll have to listen to find out the answer...) Inevitably over time, we change, and our friends may also change to better suit our transforming identities. We think it's perfectly healthy and appropriate to slowly grow out of old friendships and grow into new ones. There's no rule saying that we need to remain friends with someone with whom you shared a past if you both have chosen blatantly different paths moving forward. Even if you have chosen similar paths, interpersonal relationships are dynamic, fluid, ever changing. This also includes family. Yes, honoring changing relationships with family can be challenging; we never claimed any of this to be easy. Honest conversations with well defined boundaries are our first line of defense to re-establish the future of those relationships.
A word of caution: don't expect everyone to understand or respect your decisions. This is your life. You get one ride on this roller coaster. You've paid for the ticket and waited in line. And when the time comes for you to find your seat you'll notice the other people on the ride with you. You may also notice others waiting in line or the people who couldn't find the motivation or courage to take the ride. "It's my experience that has value," Jordan said, describing taking chances on new endeavors. If you never seek out and invest in new or better friendships you'll never know what truly valuable experiences you could share with others.
