Chamkila is one of the most iconic Punjabi singers of all time and he was in equal measures controversial, which led to him and his wife being assassinated on 8 March 1988. We sat down to talk about one of their most famous songs - Pehle Lalkare Naal, what it means in English, why Amar Singh (Chamkila) was controversial, and whether songs like this capture or perpetuate a certain type of macho/patriarchial behavior.
