Tyler Johnson scored the game winner 53 seconds into overtime to give the Tampa Bay LIghtning a 3-2 advantage, in the NHL Eastern Conference Finals. The story line was Mike Sullivan making a goale change. Veteran Marc-Andre Fleury got the nod between the pipes and it backfired. Fleury sustained a concussion in the regular season and it carried over into the playoffs. Matt Murray seized the opportunity and led the Penguins to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Murray has made some big saves, but also allowed some soft goals. Statistically, a 2.33 goals against average and .923 save percentage rank in the middle of the pack among NHL playoff goalies. However, after a poor performance in game four, Sullivan made the change. Fleury did not fare any better than Murray, as the Tampa Bay Lightning lit up the scoredboard with four goals. As fans second guess the Sullivan move, it was the right move. However, the right move happened two games to late. After a game two victory, game three would have been an optimal time to let Fleury get the rust off. It would have also given the young rookie some much needed rest. Now the Penguins are in a must win situation, and the choices are goaltender are not bright. Fleury comes off a rough outing and his confidence level can't be at 100% and Murray was benched after giving up four goals. How will he respond to adversity? Sullivan made the right call, but just not at the right time. Now he has put his team in a do or die situation.
