Originally opened in 1908, Pennhurst was established as a residential institution for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Over the decades, severe overcrowding, neglect, and documented abuse led to national attention and public outrage. The institution became the focus of a groundbreaking investigation by journalist Bill Baldini, whose documentary Suffer the Little Children exposed the conditions inside the facility and helped spark conversations about disability rights and institutional reform across the United States.
