The main reason people fail to meet their goals is that they don’t really know what they want. This is especially true for people who are just starting out in life and don’t know where their path will take them. If you don’t know what you want, it’s very easy to be swayed by other people’s opinions or to simply give up when the going gets tough. Make a list of all the things you would like to achieve in life, and have them in front of you at all times as a reminder to stay focused on what really matters.
Your list might include things like “become a better athlete,” “make more friends,” “learn how to play an instrument,” and so on. The important thing is to make sure you don’t just have vague ideas, but that you also have very specific milestones you want to achieve on the way to your final goal.
Another thing that can ruin your plans is not knowing the risks involved in your decisions and actions. Are you investing your money wisely, or taking on a new business venture that you understand completely? Are you moving to a new city, a new country (or a new planet) with your eyes wide open to the difficulties you’ll face once you get there? Do you know what your partner expects from you in a relationship, and vice versa? Is your partner ready for the responsibilities of parenthood, or can you both financially support the child you’re about to adopt? Before you take any kind of action, make sure you understand all the risks, and if possible, get advice from someone who’s been in your situation before.
There is a myth about successful people out there that they never fail. And that’s just silly. But that myth is also keeping a lot of people from ever really trying – and from ever really achieving their dreams. They’re afraid of failing, and they don’t even try. To be successful, you have to be willing to at least risk failing. In fact, if you’re not failing on a regular basis, then you’re probably not moving forward enough.
You have to be ready to try new things, and sometimes, those things won’t work out. Failure is part of life, and it’s also part of success. If you’re not failing, then you’re not taking enough risks, and you’re also not moving forward fast enough. Failure is also a great teacher. If you fail, use that failure to learn what went wrong. Don’t dwell on it, but use it as a tool to help you do better next time.
