Welcome to the first episode of Security Download. Our host is Anna Redmond, the Founder at Braav. Anna sits down with today’s guest Chris Hoyer, the Instructor for Security Forces at BSIS as well as the author of When That Day Comes: Training for the Fight. After spending 20 years as a street cop, he used his experiences and chronicled his stories into his book and is here to share his views on what security companies need to do to make sure they are on top of their game.

  • When you hire someone to be a guard or an officer, they need to take the job and responsibilities seriously. They will be the first responders and people will see them in uniform and view them as a sense of authority and security.
  • In terms of hiring a security officer, you want to make sure that they are properly trained to handle the mental, physical and emotional aspects of their job. They have to be prepared for the worst case scenario and be ready to handle that situation.
  • A simple way to prove safety for someone is to offer to help them load or unload their car. This is something that can be easily done and provides an ease of mind for anyone that you are offering to help.
  • Your appearance as a security officer matters. You never want your security officer to look sloppy as it gives off the appearance that they aren’t prepared and then they can’t be taken seriously.
  • Not all confrontations need to end in violence for a security officer. You can deescalate the situation by choosing the right words and calming down the person involved in the situation.
