Perfection is Not the Bar with Peyton Garland

Listen Later

In this episode, Peyton shares her journey to becoming a recovering perfectionist and holding onto the belief that she is free not to be perfect.

  1. She was always a rule follower who wanted to pursue perfection and be the "good" girl. She found herself following all the "right" rules for wrong reasons. When suddenly found herself married and alone as her spouse followed his dream. The one person she leaned on the most was hours away, and she had to drown in her overwhelm and loneliness. She embraced grace, forgiveness and stepping into imperfection.
  2. To step forward, she had to fail by embracing the imperfection and found herself in a therapist's office as she lost control of what she once "thought" she had control of.
  3. As a result of therapy, she was provided with a diagnosis that provided relief by recognizing that there was something she could do to decrease the symptoms.
  4. She realized that her need for perfection was a symptom of her OCD. Working through the diagnosis has improved her life as an individual and her relationships with those around her. She recognized that the expectations that she had for herself bleed onto everyone around her.
  5. She embraced forgiveness for herself and the expectations.
