Michael McGovern and Tim Adams have a conversation about Tim's business and coaching experience. Tim has been a coach for over 30 years and has clocked in over 43,000 hours of one-on-one coaching with some of the best in the world. He is getting ready to launch his new program, Game Above the Game, and is excited to talk about it. Tim expresses how he has been a 'best kept secret' as a coach, and Michael is excited to have him on the Reckless CEO Podcast. They discuss how being a coach wasn't always 'cool' and how Tim's experience and knowledge is invaluable to those he works with.
Michael and Tim discuss Tim's journey to becoming a performance coach. Tim began his career by playing football for the Air Force Academy, but he was cut from the team when he tore his knee. He then asked the strength coach if he could be a student coach and started his path to becoming a performance coach. He went on to get a Master's in exercise science, and traveled the world to study under the best coaches, physiologists, and researchers. He was in the Air Force for 13 years, and also coached at the academy. Michael reflects on his own story of how he lost his identity when he stopped playing hockey and fell into the plant life. Both Michael and Tim reflect back in the conversation about finding themselves in the things that they lost.
Tim Adams was in the military for eight years before taking a job as a strength and conditioning coach at the Air Force Academy. He was also an adjunct business instructor and taught physical education courses such as unarmed combat, weightlifting, and tennis. He was approved to get a PhD while at the academy, but the military changed their mind and sent him to go buy missiles in La. He loved the university environment as it was like a time machine, where he could be around people the same age as him.
Tim Adams was initially working for the Air Force, but was soon offered a position in LA which he and his wife turned down. He then decided to start his own business and sent resumes to every NFL team without any success. He then realized he knew nothing about speed and learned from Ben Johnson's coach Charlie Francis. He then noticed Obadaily Thompson breaking the world record and wanted to learn from his coach Dan Path. After finally meeting Dan at an all comers track meet, he was invited to Houston to meet Tom Tlez and the rest is history.
