The great Athenian statesman, Pericles, offered this speech, one of the most famous in history, at the end of the first year of the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC). It is probable that Socrates was present at the speech, and Plato would be born within two years following it. It was the Golden Age of Greece, and Pericles was in no small way responsible for that.
