Publisher's Summary:
Ten incredible stories of world class athletes with formidable mindstates.
We are living beneath our potential, allowing our doubts and anxieties to close us within an ever-tightening circle of possibility. We are too willing to accept things as they are. We do less than we could to realise our potential, to live the life that is available to us if only we will reach out and take it.
Personal Best will help you unlock your potential by pointing you towards the kind of mental strengths that drive the performance of some of the world's greatest athletes. Those seeking to improve their personal, professional or athletic outcomes can adopt these mindsets.
The 10 championship virtues, which cover everything from tenacity and dedication to love and belief, are the mental (not physical) qualities. We make them not a part of our lives but of ourselves. These qualities power elite-level performance, and they can power change in your life.
Through exceptional storytelling and practical lessons, Josh Black will guide you towards your own transformative trigger moment. The profiles of courage and endurance contained in this book move from the elation of victory to the agony of defeat, and they will provide you with the tools you need to both face and overcome life's seemingly insurmountable obstacles on the way to spectacular success.

How to excel at your passion
As the subtitle of "Personal Best" indicates, author Josh Black's thesis is that we can learn from high-performance athletes how to transform and get the most out of our life, excelling in whatever it is for which we have a true passion. Josh Black has spent much of his adult life working with athletes, and in this book he has distilled ten characteristics that they possess that allow them to excel in their endeavors in such a way that they reach heights far beyond what most people do or even aspire to. These characteristics, or virtues, as Black calls them, are tenacity, acceptance, courage, purposefulness, belief, dedication, love, focus, competitiveness, and discipline.
Each of these virtues is discussed in a chapter in which Black presents a case study of an athlete who exemplifies this particular virtue. For example, John Maclean, a gifted triathlete who became paralyzed when his car was hit by a semi going at sixty-plus miles per hour, but who continued to compete, exemplifies tenacity. Dean Karnazes, an ultramarathoner who has run the Badwater untramarathon through Death Valley and has accomplished other seemingly superhuman feats in ultramarathon running, exemplifies acceptance. Soccer star Kristine Lilly provides Black with his example of someone who truly loves her sport.
Josh Black does a really good job of providing the reader a sense of how the dedication of elite athletes who exemplify these virtues leads to such success. However, his purpose is more than simply to describe but also to get the reader to see how applying these virtues to one's own endeavors can lead a person to excel in whatever it is that he or she is passionate about.
