Joseph took a quick look for the image of Diogenes on a world full of torches, and couldn't find it. He definitely heard it in his philosophy of science class in undergrad to underscore the issue of finding a scientific paradigm that could really go the distance, and it stuck with him since then, but he can't recall if it was in Thomas Kuhn's work on scientific paradigms, or if it was just a fun image the professor had cooked up.
