The further adventures of Emma McChesney and son
After ten years on the road as the Midwestern sales representative for T.A. Buckâs Featherloom skirts and petticoats the savvy, stylish, tell-it-like-it-is Emma McChesney now shares a New York City apartment with her plucky 21-year-old son Jock. She shares this story with him too--Emmaâs busy being T. A. Buck, Jr.âs business partner and Jockâs trying to break into 1914âs version of Mad Men by getting a job in the up and coming business of advertising.
Jock is as high-spirited as his mother and feels ready to take on the world, but heâs still got a lot to learn. Emmaâs having some trouble adjusting to Jockâs growing independence, but T. A. Buck, Jr. would love to distract Emma from her looming empty nest by having more than a business relationship.
Personality Plus is Edna Ferberâs second of three books about the jaunty, irresistible, early career woman Emma McChesney. Ferber wrote all three long enough ago that theyâre in the public domain so ebook versions can be downloaded from sites like Project Gutenberg and here on Amazon. I also listened to a wonderfully narrated audio version available on the Libravox website that made me not mind being stuck in traffic--I had witty Emma to keep me company.
Strong woman character
I like old books, this one. Strong woman character makes this book unusual. It was very good reading. Though I've only read one other book by edna Gerber I would recommend her books
Middle book of the Emma McChesney series
Another wonderful book from Ferber.
This one is more about Jock McChesney starting out in advertising but like the others, there's Emma (off the road now to help run the company), TA Buck, and characters at Jock's new firm -Grace a copywriter and several other fun characters all talking slang and trying to sell - sell advertising, sell petticoats - sell. And ethical questions that prove business may not have changed as much as we think.
There's some fun stuff here for women - especially when Emma threatens to marry a bellboy just to punish Jock for being condescending and again the feeling of both a new industry (advertising) and the problems of an old industry (petticoat manufacturing).
I wouldn't read this one first, but as part of the series it's good.
