Perth council under fire for anti-homeless noise devices

Listen Later

The City of Perth has installed high-pitched noise-emitting speakers in a CBD underpass and car parks, which rough sleepers say effectively prevents them from sheltering in these locations. Homelessness advocates have criticised the devices as hostile architecture, while the council maintains they are safety measures, with neither the City nor transport authority taking clear responsibility for the decision. The controversy follows a similar incident in Bunbury in 2023 where a Wiggles song was played on loop to deter homeless people.
