A 78-year-old Perth grandfather survived a direct lightning strike while walking his daughter's dog in Hammersley during a violent summer storm that produced over a thousand lightning strikes across the city. The bolt killed the dog, Messi, and left Michael Day with burns to his chest and leg, exploding his phone and destroying his clothing. The same storm system caused two teenage girls to be struck by lightning at a school in Mount Helena, knocked out train services, cut power to homes, and sparked a house fire in Nolamara.
