We are well into Deaf Dog Awareness Week and here at Pets on Q we were lucky enough to sit down with Natalie who runs the Houston-based rescue, Hot Mess Pooches. Natalie specializes in rescuing disabled dogs with hearing impairments and she especially loves Dalmatians (like Colleen), so she had a lot of great information to share with us. June 26, 2020 PET NEWS! END OF SEASON ONE RECAP EPISODE!
Here at Pets on Q, with Pet News, we have tried to report on things pertaining to the animal world, because that is our business. However, we are very aware of the historic non-animal related things happening in America right now. We are hopeful that through education and awareness we can achieve positive change in our society for people of color. We believe in equality for everyone and acknowledge that there need to be some major changes; we are here to be allies.
We have ended our first season of the Pet News Podcast, and we are very happy about how it has come together. We recorded this last episode several weeks ago, and have been holding off releasing it. We did not wish to take away from anything that was happening online in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
In this final episode of season one, Colleen and I chat and recap the season together. Please join us for a fun look back at our first year of Pet News.

April 21, 2020 Once a lion is raised with humans, can it ever be released back into the wild?
In this episode of Pet News, Colleen speak to Nathan Webb of Antelope Park in the Southern African country of Zimbabwe. Nathan has spent the last 15 years working with captive bred lions. We learn how he and his team have developed a multi-step, multi-generational program to release lions back into the wild; it is truly groundbreaking work! There is no question that the lion is one of the most powerful symbols used the world over. From family crests to Lionsgate film, it is a status symbol that is instantly recognizable. Lions are an even more essential part of the world ecosystem than we realize. Please listen as we discuss the rapid decline of the number of lions in the wild due to the human wildlife conflict, canned hunting and the trafficking of all kinds of animals. We also discuss the unique challenges lions face in the wild, and as game for canned “hunters” where they have literally no chance at survival. It is truly inspiring how Nathan is fixing some of the issues in his country to make it better for this beautiful species, we hope you enjoy it!

Wild Animal Sanctuary is on the front line rescuing big cats from people like Joe Exotic. In fact, Kent’s sanctuary has taken in over THIRTY big cats (and a few bears) that were surrendered from Joe Exotic’s facility! He’s here to talk about what he has witnessed and remind everyone that behind the glitz and glam of the sensationalized TV show, there are real animal lives at stake, and they deserve better. He’s here to teach us all about the regulations in the big cat world and how he does things differently.

In this episode of Pet News, we meet with two different rescue organizations and find out what is actually going on during this uncertain time around the country. How are our animals impacted by the corona virus? We meet with Christy Stevens of Hearts Alive village in Los Vegas who can shine some light on some of the good she has seen in the pet community coming together. In a state 1,500 miles away we speak to Natalie a small rescue in Huston, Texas Hot mess pooches. She is a breed specific rescuer who is hit hard by this already and is uncertain of her future and will share some of the challenge she is facing.
