Have you ever noticed that the apostle Peter’s calling doesn’t happen suddenly? Instead, it proceeds progressively over the course of four occasions. The first is recorded in John 1. On that occasion, Andrew invites his brother to meet Jesus. This is a pivotal experience for Peter, but it’s only the start.

The second is recorded in Luke 5. On this occasion, Jesus preaches from Peter’s boat. Peter is overcome with Jesus’ righteousness and his own sinfulness. In many ways, this is Peter’s conversion experience.

The third is recorded in Mark 1 and Matthew 4. It follows closely on the heels of the second occasion. Jesus now calls Andrew and Peter, and their partners James and John, to “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men.” When Peter says yes, his calling is confirmed.

The fourth is recorded in Luke 6. On this occasion, Jesus draws all of His followers together and appoints Peter as one of His 12 apostles.
