Petra Stock talks Renewables and Storage Powering Australia

Listen Later

In this podcast, Beyond Zero radio talk to Petra Stock, an Environmental Engineer and The Climate Council's lead on energy and climate solutions, across policy and technological developments. She talks about the Climate Council's latest report "Fully Charged: Renewables and Storage Powering Australia". The Climate Council, is a not-for-profit organisation based in Melbourne with a team of approximately 20 researchers, journalists etc. who report to the public mainly on matters of energy.
""What about Snowy Mark 2 - Is it just an expensive thought bubble from the P.M.?"

Petra is not in favour of the Snowy Mark 2 about which there has been plenty of publicity recently with reference to an early feasibility study. She wonders what would happen in an extreme drought which could be likely with climate change and she considers there is a diverse range of storage options available including battery, solar thermal, hydrogen and the smaller pump hydro sites, both salt and fresh water. Also, she says batteries are following renewables which dropped 80% in price and expected to become even more competitive in price by 2025. Pumped hydro is said to a member of count for 96% of world storage already. Of course, it is to be hoped Snowy would not be powered by coal or gas!

Concerning the reliability of batteries compared with old coal fired stations almost at their use-by date Petra pointed out that there was failure in the case of the latter in the recent extreme weather and the slack was taken up by the S.A. battery - a fact not mentioned by the politicians publicly who are only too keen to criticise S.A. with their 50% renewables and she said Australia could match that. Batteries can deal with reliability, security and affordability factors usually mentioned by members of the government when they use the term "dispatchable".
