Petrol Cars Losing Ground to EVs in Australia

Listen Later

Hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles are surging in popularity in Australia, with petrol cars rapidly losing ground. New sales figures reveal a significant shift, with low-emission vehicles now separating petrol cars by fewer than 2,600 units in November. Petrol vehicle sales plummeted by 18.1% in November and 9.5% for the year, while plug-in hybrid sales more than doubled in 2025, increasing by 130%. Electric vehicle sales also accelerated, making up 9.1% of the market with over 9,000 new models sold in November. This trend suggests that petrol-powered cars could make up less than half of the market by 2027, as consumers seek flexible and environmentally friendly options.
