  • #36: Who's Holding Your Leash? How to Reclaim Control

Are you unknowingly letting others control you?

As a (recovering) control freak, this episode hits close to home for me. Regarding what you can and cannot control, today I'm diving into why you might be giving away power over what you actually can control to others. If you've ever found yourself frustrated by other people's opinions, actions, or words, this episode is for you.

You know you can't control others. No matter how carefully you choose our words or how much effort you put into making someone happy, their reactions are out of your hands. But what about the reverse? What about control over yourself you willingly give up—when you let someone else's actions dictate your emotions, your choices, and even your self-worth?

I like to think of it as handing over your leash. When you're walking your dog (or cat, or rabbit—yes, I've seen it!), you guide them, keep them safe, and help them navigate the world. But what happens when you give your leash to someone else? Suddenly, you're the one being pulled in directions you never intended, reacting instead of leading.

In this episode, I share a deeply personal experience that changed the way I see control—one that took me from burnout and frustration to reclaiming my choices, my emotions, and ultimately, my happiness. I'll also talk about a powerful mindset shift that can help you stop dwelling on 'what ifs' and start focusing on what you can control.

So, get ready to take back your leash. Let's get started!

    Episode Highlights:

    • 02:16 – Giving away control in daily life
    • 05:06 – You only have to feel any emotion for 90 seconds
    • 07:46 – Personal story: overcoming burnout
    • 10:50 – The power of mindset
    • 12:51 – The key to taking back control

Discover how to break free from outside influence and step into your own power!

  • #35: Beyond Labels: Seeing Yourself & Others with Curiosity

Labels shape our world—but are they helping or holding you back?

In this episode, I'm going on a little thought experiment—one that might just change how you see yourself and the world around you. Who doesn't love a good label? They help you sort things out, make decisions faster, and help you feel like you understand the world (at least a little bit). But what happens when you apply too many labels to people, pets, and even yourself?

Think about it: clouds and medications are both labeled, but in completely different ways. Clouds are described loosely—big, fluffy, stormy—but you don't try to define every last detail. Medications, on the other hand, are labeled down to the molecular structure to avoid confusion and ensure safety. So which approach do you take with the people (and pets) around you? And more importantly—how do these labels impact the way you live your life?

Join me in this episode as I explore the power of labels, the emotional baggage they carry, and what happens when you get curious instead of defining everything in black and white. I'll also challenge you to start seeing people the way you watch clouds—without immediate judgment, just with curiosity. Because when you stop over-defining, you can open up a world of possibilities!

    Episode Highlights:

    • 01:22 – How easily you can define clouds
    • 02:56 – The need for precise definitions with medications
    • 04:44 – Curiosity is easier with clouds than with people
    • 07:05 – Emotions and labels
    • 09:17 – Stereotypes behind pet labels
    • 10:24 – Hidden stories behind human labels
    • 14:07 – The ultimate shift: seeing humanity first

  • #34: No Apology Needed: Pet Messes at the Vet Clinic

Messy moments at the vet aren't just normal—they can actually be useful!

In this episode, I'm diving into something that happens in vet clinics every single day—but somehow still makes people cringe with embarrassment: when pets pee or poop in the exam room. If you've ever apologized profusely while scrambling to clean up after your pet, this episode is for you!

First things first—your pet is not the only one doing this. Far from it. Vet clinics are literally designed to handle these messes, and guess what? Sometimes, that poop your dog or cat just dropped in the middle of the exam room is exactly what your vet needs to run important tests.

But beyond the mess, there's something deeper going on here—our emotional reactions. Embarrassment, guilt, feeling out of control—these feelings are totally normal, but how can you reframe them? Through curiosity, you can see that your pet's reaction actually tells you a lot about their stress levels, their comfort, and even their health. And the same goes for you—when life gets messy, your emotions are clues, not problems to hide away.

In this episode, we'll talk about why messiness—whether it's in the exam room or in our emotions—deserves a second look. Plus, I'll share practical tips on how to make vet visits smoother for both you and your pet. So, let's embrace the mess and find the meaning in it together!

    Episode Highlights:

    • 00:49 – Yes, it's normal for pets to make a mess
    • 02:02 – What's behind the embarrassment
    • 02:37 – How bathroom accidents help your pet's care
    • 03:36 – Solutions for anxious pets
    • 05:40 – Connections between messiness and emotional health

Loving your pet doesn't mean knowing everything.

Another apology I hear way too often? Apologizing for not knowing something! You bring your pet in, get unexpected news, and suddenly you're drowning in guilt, thinking, "I should've known." But here's the thing: You were never supposed to know everything. Even veterinarians don't have all the answers all the time!

In this episode, we're diving into the emotional weight of not knowing and why it's time to let go of the guilt. We'll talk about how knowledge doesn't guarantee control, how we can shift from self-judgment to self-forgiveness, and why simply showing up for your pet is what truly matters. I'll also share a personal story about my own dog, Roscoe, and the unexpected lessons I learned when faced with the unknown.

  • #31: No Apology Needed: Budgets for Vet Care

Your pet chose you, not your bank account.

This episode is about another apology veterinarians get way too often—people apologizing for having a budget when it comes to their pet's care. And I get it—money is emotional. We've been conditioned to believe that if we just had enough money, we could control outcomes, guarantee our pet's health, or somehow prove that we're "good enough". But here's the truth: your worth isn't tied to your bank account, and neither is your pet's love for you.

As a veterinarian, I actually want to know when you have a budget—not to squeeze every penny out of you, but to help you make the best decisions within your resources. When you tell me, "This is what I can afford," you're not being difficult—you're being brave. That honesty allows us to get creative, prioritize treatments, and work together for the best possible outcome.

The hard part? Unpacking the money stories we've all carried since childhood—the ones that tell us that security, worth, and control come with a price tag. In this episode, we're breaking down those myths and shifting the mindset around money and pet care. Because there is no dollar amount on your pet's love for you.

So, if you've ever felt guilty about bringing up a budget at the vet, this one's for you. Let's take the shame out of the conversation and focus on what really matters—giving our pets the best life possible, with the resources we have.

    Episode Highlights:

    • 01:22 – Discuss your budget early
    • 03:13 – Money doesn't guarantee health
    • 05:33 – Uncertainty in medicine
    • 07:12 – Money as a neutral resource
    • 08:40 – Your pet chose you

  • #30: No Apology Needed: Questions for the Vet

Your vet wants you to ask questions!

This week, we're addressing something I see all the time in the clinic—people apologizing for asking questions about their pets. Maybe you've said, "Sorry, I have another question," or felt embarrassed for not understanding medical jargon. But here's the truth: You should be asking questions! And not just for your own peace of mind, but because it directly impacts your pet's health and well-being.

As a veterinarian, my job isn't just about diagnosing and treating—it's also about making sure you feel informed and confident about caring for your pet. And if something isn't clear? That's not a reflection on you—it means I can explain it better. This episode is all about shifting your mindset from "I don't want to bother the vet" to "I deserve to understand what's happening with my pet."

We'll also talk about how your personal resources—time, money, energy—play a huge role in decision-making and why it's okay to say, "I need a clear recommendation right now." So if you've ever hesitated before speaking up at the vet's office, this episode is for you. Let's break down those barriers!

    Episode Highlights:

    • 01:01 - Why people apologize for asking questions
    • 02:42 - Trusting your instincts
    • 04:13 - Asking questions helps everyone
    • 05:04 - Understanding your own resources

  • #29: No Apology Needed: Stinky Pets at The Vet

Have you ever apologized to your vet for something totally unnecessary?

Hey there, pet lovers! It's time for a heart-to-heart about something I see all the time in the vet clinic - apologizing for things that don't need an apology. Seriously, I can't tell you how often people come in, shoulders hunched, with a guilty look, and the first thing they say is, "I'm so sorry about…"—you name it. Whether it's not giving their dog a bath before the appointment, missing a dose of medication, or feeling like they're not doing "enough," I hear it all.

And let me tell you—you don't need to apologize.

As a veterinarian, I see the love and care you give your pets every day. I know you're doing your best, and guess what? That's exactly what matters. This episode is about unpacking that guilt, recognizing where it comes from (hello, self-judgment!), and learning to let go of unnecessary worry.

So let's dig in. I'm breaking down why you don't need to apologize for a stinky pet, and how to shift your mindset so you can walk into your next vet visit with confidence. Your pet loves you, your vet supports you, and this is your permission slip to stop apologizing. Ready? Let's go!

    Episode Highlights:

    • 01:08 – Why vet visits bring out unnecessary guilt
    • 03:08 – Where this guilt comes from

    Pet Relationship Mini-Series: 5 of 5

From puppy accidents to senior pet care, our pets give us endless opportunities to practice patience, love, and self-forgiveness!

You know that moment when your pet does something completely ridiculous—maybe they knock over a full glass of water, chew up your favorite socks, or wake you up at 3 AM just because they felt like it—and yet, you still love them unconditionally? That's the magic of our bond with pets. We forgive them effortlessly. We never question their worth. But when it comes to ourselves? That's a whole different story.

In this episode, we're diving deep into self-worth and emotional investment—two things we often understand instinctively for our pets, but struggle to apply to ourselves. We'll also talk about forgiveness—not just for our pets when they make a mess, but for ourselves when we fall short of our own expectations. Plus, I'll share why investing in your pet's well-being (whether it's time, training, or emotional energy) is just as important as investing in your own.

In this episode, we'll talk about what our pets can teach us about showing ourselves the same love and patience we show them. Because at the heart of it, our pets are teaching us how to be better—not just for them, but for ourselves too.

From anxious pacing to confident strides—discover how training and communication can transform your pet's mental state!

Welcome! This is the fourth episode in our five-part miniseries on relationships with our pets, and we're diving deep into how you can actively support your pet's mental resilience.

You love your pet like family, but they experience the world very differently than you do. It's no surprise that these shifts can cause stress and confusion for our furry friends.

So, how can you help? Mindfulness and Communication are the foundation for training your pet on what to expect and how to respond. By paying attention to their body language and providing clear, consistent cues, you can build their confidence and create a sustainable mental state that allows them to thrive. Whether it's socializing them to new experiences, training them for everyday life, or just being aware of their emotional needs, you can guide your pet through this human-dominated world with patience and understanding.
