Between 1764 and 1767, something walked out of the mountains of Gévaudan and didn't stop. A parish clerk named Auguste starts out dutifully logging the dead — names, dates, "slain by the beast" — and ends up questioning whether he's been recording a wolf attack or covering for something his own village did to itself. Royal hunters fail. A carcass rots on its way to Versailles. A local hunter fires a bullet blessed on a statue of the Virgin Mary, and the killing stops for good — but the suspicion never does. The Phantom Navigator lays out the case for a human serial killer, a genuine cryptid, and an ordinary animal made monstrous by three years of terror — and leaves the verdict to you. No music. No ads. Just the ledger, and whatever's still in the trees.

In 1817, John Bell shot at a dog in his cornfield that vanished into thin air. Four years later he was dead — poisoned by a vial nobody in his family had ever seen — and the thing responsible crashed his own funeral to sing drinking songs over the casket. It called itself Kate. It had two goals, stated out loud for years: kill the father, break up the daughter's engagement. It succeeded at both.
This is the Bell Witch — the most famous haunting in American history, and one built almost entirely on the word of a single 19th-century newspaper editor whose "primary source" manuscript no other living person ever saw. We dig into the documented fabrications, the real neighbor whose name got attached to a murder confession, the alternate legend that makes John Bell the villain instead of the victim, and the promise the entity made on her way out the door — a vow to haunt "kith and kin," on a schedule, landing on a return date in 2044.
Watch your cornfields.

In 2011, the CDC published "Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse" — a tongue-in-cheek campaign that quietly ran for a full decade before vanishing overnight with no explanation. That same spring, planners at U.S. Strategic Command — the people who oversee America's nuclear arsenal — drafted CONPLAN 8888, a real, unclassified military document for "Counter-Zombie Dominance," complete with a threat typology, a phased operational doctrine, and a paragraph on the constitutional rights of the reanimated. A year later, the military ran a live drill against zombies in San Diego with a thousand real personnel. This episode follows Cornelius Dredd, a federal bureaucrat who started pulling the thread — and found a redacted general's name, a fungus that already does this to ants in the wild, and a handwritten note that never should have made it into the file.

The Book of Enoch is one of the strangest documents in religious history: a Second Temple Jewish text that tells the story Genesis skipped, where 200 "Watchers" swear an oath on Mount Hermon, descend to earth, and teach humanity the knowledge heaven meant to keep.
In this episode, we go through the text itself: the descent, the giants, the roster of archangels and their jurisdictions, the "angels of the Presence," the 364-day calendar delivered by Uriel, and the origin story of demons as the leftover spirits of an angelic crime. We also correct the myth of the tidy "nine orders of angels," which does not come from Enoch at all.
Then we follow how the book was starved out of Western Christianity, why it stayed alive in Ethiopia for fifteen hundred years, and how a vain, exaggerating Scottish explorer named James Bruce carried the complete text to Europe in 1773, and why nobody believed him.
Along the way: Jude, Tertullian's very strange Noah argument, the Dead Sea Scrolls, a scapegoat that may be an angel, John Dee's century-early obsession with a book he couldn't read, and an explorer who survived a civil war and died on a staircase.
This is the first of a two-part descent into the architecture of the unseen. Next: what happened to the spirits of the giants.

The most feared grimoire in Western history doesn't ask you to worship demons. It asks you to serve them paperwork.
In this episode of The Phantom Navigator, we open the Lemegeton, also known as the Lesser Key of Solomon, and find something stranger than the legend. Magicians didn't bow to the seventy-two princes of hell. They bound themselves to God first, used divine names as legal leverage, and summoned demons like recalcitrant civil servants to a court hearing.
We go through all five books of the grimoire, including the one that's just prayers for acing your finals. We look at the possibility that hell's famous ranking comes from a dropped stack of manuscript pages, and at the odd spirit details that may be scribal misreadings. We cover why there are exactly seventy-two demons, and why they're a mirror-image inversion of seventy-two holy angels. And we expose the forgery: a book credited to King Solomon but cobbled together in English Civil War London by anonymous occultists.
Then the conspiracy theories get unhinged:
Solomon's Temple as a demon-powered labor scheme
Demonology as a spy network's steganographic cover
Aleister Crowley's claim that the demons were never external at all, just the parts of you that you'd rather not meet
Woven through it all is Ambrose Quill, a broke 1649 copyist hired to duplicate the forbidden pages. He only wanted to fix the filing, and he finished with a list that doesn't match anything else, one entry too long.
No music. No sound effects. No ad breaks. Just you, me, and a hell with middle management.

Enrico De Pedis ran the Magliana gang. When he was shot dead in 1990, he was buried in the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare, steps from the music school where Emanuela Orlandi, a 15-year-old Vatican citizen, was last seen in 1983. This episode follows the mobster, the missing girl, an anonymous phone call, a witness nobody fully trusts, and a tomb that was opened in 2012. It also covers the digs since, from the Teutonic Cemetery to Villa Osio, and the unpaid favor at the center of it all.
