Police Chase Spurs K-9 Drug Search in Strawberry Mansion
Early Tuesday, a police pursuit in the neighborhood ended with officers bringing in a K-9 unit to search a vehicle for drugs. Nothing like sirens followed by a sniff test to serve as the city’s least charming wake-up call. No injuries reported, and no charges announced yet.
Trial Finds Sertraline May Reduce Domestic Violence Reoffending
A first-of-its-kind, double-blind Australian trial suggests sertraline, an SSRI, can reduce domestic violence reoffending among men already convicted of violent offenses. Researchers from UNSW and the University of Newcastle tracked 630 men from 2013 to 2021, assigning sertraline or a placebo. Those on sertraline saw domestic violence incidents 5.7 percent lower after one year and a 44 percent reduction in repeated offending over 24 months, as published in The Lancet’s eClinicalMedicine. Partners reported feeling safer when men stayed on the medication. Caveats are substantial. Effects on general violence were inconclusive, benefits depended on adherence and duration, and many participants faced homelessness, mental illness, and substance use. This is not a cure, it is a potentially meaningful tool that only works inside broader programs with counseling, crisis support, and close monitoring. In other words, medicine can help apply the brakes, policy has to build the guardrails.
Eagles Fans Wear Third Straight Loss, Still Bet on January
After an overtime loss in Inglewood, South Philly’s volume dropped but the eye-rolls hit decibels. At Chickie’s & Pete’s, frustration centered on zero first-half touchdowns and three turnovers, with armchair coordinators calling for coaching tweaks and a little more Jalen Hurts on the move. There was superstition, a Super Bowl ring waved like a ward, and sincerity, including a fan who buried his father in a Hurts jersey. The mood, classic Philly: aggravated optimism. Faith in Hurts, faith in the postseason, and a plea that the offense stops treating the first half like extra credit.
Employee Dispute Becomes Stabbing Outside South Philadelphia Walmart
Police say an argument between workers moved outside the store and escalated into a stabbing. Details on injuries or arrests were not immediately available. Investigators are reviewing evidence and interviewing witnesses. We will update as facts are confirmed.
Pennsylvania Gas Prices Stay High While National Average Slips Below 3 Dollars
AAA says the national average has dipped under 3 dollars for the first time since May 2021. GasBuddy counts 37 states under 3, 22 under 2.75, and five under 2.50, with the most common and median price at 2.79. California continues its regulatory performance art at 4.51, followed by Hawaii at 4.44 and Washington at 4.14. Pennsylvania sits at 3.20, tied with D.C., just above Idaho at 3.19. Bargain bins include Oklahoma at 2.40, with Texas, Arkansas, Colorado, and Mississippi in the mid 2.50s. Cheaper crude near 60 dollars a barrel, lighter winter demand, and the switch to a less costly winter blend are doing the heavy lifting. Unless you live in a state determined to make fueling up feel like fine dining, in which case, enjoy your premium-priced regular.
