Sunday Morning Messages from God's Word

Philemon: A Masterclass in Motivation

Listen Later

In this lesson, John Mulligan turns to the short New Testament letter of Philemon to explore how the gospel transforms difficult relationships. The letter centers on a conflict between Philemon, a Christian who owned a servant, and Onesimus, the servant who had run away and later became a believer after meeting the apostle Paul. Rather than commanding Philemon to act in a certain way, Paul carefully appeals to the faith they share in Christ. By reminding Philemon of his love for the Lord and for other believers, Paul lays the groundwork for addressing the broken relationship in a way that reflects the spirit of the gospel.
The appeal that follows is built on love rather than authority. Paul acknowledges that he could command what is right, but instead asks Philemon to receive Onesimus no longer as a slave but as a brother in Christ. Onesimus, once considered useless after running away, has now become useful through his transformation in Christ. By sending Onesimus back and urging reconciliation, Paul demonstrates confidence that genuine faith produces genuine love. The gospel does more than forgive sins—it reshapes relationships, restoring dignity and turning former divisions into fellowship among brothers and sisters in the Lord.
Paul’s closing appeal highlights the power of Christian brotherhood. If Onesimus owes anything, Paul offers to repay it, removing every barrier to reconciliation. The expectation is clear: welcome him as you would welcome Paul himself. The letter shows how believers resolve conflict—not through intimidation, pride, or demands, but through humility, trust, and a shared commitment to do what is right in Christ. Though brief, the message of Philemon provides a powerful guide for handling disagreements today, reminding Christians that love and faithfulness to the Lord must shape the way they treat one another.
