The FDA and Philips Respironics are recalling CPAP and BIPAP masks with magnetic headgear clips that hold them in place. The affected masks are: Amara View Full Face Mask, DreamWisp Nasal Mask, DreamWear Full Face Mask, Wisp and Wisp Youth Nasal Mask, and Therapy Mask 3100 NC/SP. These magnetic masks are a danger to those with implanted medical devices with magnetic switches that the mask magnets may accidentally switch off or on. Those include users or the masks, anyone nearby the masks, and healthcare personnel working with patients using the masks. The implanted devices at risk include: pacemakers, cardioverters, neurostimulators, magnetic electrodes, spinal fluid shunts, aneurysm clips, embolic coils, cranial hardware, metallic eye splinters, ocular implants, certain contact lenses, cochlear implants, bone conduction hearing aids, pumps such as the insulin pumps, nerve stimulators, and any magnetic resonance unsafe devices. Those with these masks should speak with their medical teams about acquiring non-magnetic masks. For additional information, contact Philips Respironics’ customer service at 1-800-345-6443.
