Phillies Weekly ⚾️🔔 After becoming the hottest team in baseball and finishing August with the best record in MLB, the Phillies faced another important test this week. They went 2-4 against the Astros and Braves, raising a much bigger question with the playoffs approaching: Can the Phillies beat the National League's best teams when it matters most?
Join Oscar Budejen with special guests Mike McGarry (The Press of Atlantic City), Tyler Poitras (@PhilsTailgate) and John Foley (@2008Philz) as they break down a concerning season-long trend and what it could mean for the Phillies in the playoffs.
The Phillies are just 8-21 against Brewers, Dodgers, Braves, and Cubs, four of the National League's top contenders. They have already lost the season series to the Dodgers, Cubs and Braves, while three games against the Brewers remain next week. They are also 32-37 against teams above .500, compared with 51-30 against teams below .500. Are these simply regular-season numbers, or evidence of a larger problem against elite competition?
The concerns go beyond the record. Baserunning and defensive mistakes continue to cost the Phillies, the bullpen has shown cracks, and Jesús Luzardo's shoulder stiffness adds another question heading into the playoffs. But there are reasons for optimism: Zack Wheeler appears to be regaining his form, Luzardo's MRI showed no structural damage, Andrew Painter continues to battle and develop, and the Phillies responded to two difficult losses in Atlanta with a big six-run, two-out eighth inning Sunday.
With the NL East slipping away and only 12 games remaining, the Phillies' attention increasingly turns toward securing the best possible Wild Card position and preparing for the playoffs.
The Phillies have shown they can get hot. But can they beat the NL's best teams when the season is on the line?
