It is May 17, 1961.
The new American president, John F. Kennedy, is in Ottawa, Canada, to address members of the Canadian Houses of Parliament.
It is his first foreign trip as president.
Speaking first in French, he tells the members “I feel that I am truly among friends.”
Then, in English, Kennedy says, for decades, American and Canadian relations have been characterized by ‘the enduring qualities of amity and honor’ with a border which has known ‘neither guns nor guerilla fighters.’
