There have been other hard times.
And, in their day, as events unfolded, many were called ‘unprecedented.’
Commentators would despair, ‘where is the new leader who will carry the nation through this peril?’
At times, a white knight would appear, but not always.
Sometimes, the public arena seemed devoid of heroes, leaving the incompetents and evil doers standing there alone and unchallenged.
And the crepe hangers would do their work, forecasting national doom.
But yet, despite those other dark times, here we are.
The American story is one of resilience.
