In March 1924, nineteen-year-old Madeline Blair, a prostitute who worked the streets of Manhattan under the name “Blackie,” befriended a group of sailors from the USS Arizona who were in town on shore leave.
Blackie told the sailors she dreamed of going to California and making it big in the movies, but she didn’t have any money for the trip.
So the sailors smuggled her onboard the Arizona, which was California bound.
