Heavy gun duels between French and German artillery units have broken out northeast of Ypres, Belgium, and along the banks of the Meuse River, near Verdun.

Poor weather has limited aerial activity and there have been no recent infantry engagements.

Two German cruisers attacked a neutral Scandinavian merchant convoy in the North Sea on October 17, sinking nine vessels along with two Royal Navy escort ships.

The dark night enabled the German attack ships to evade detection and escape unscathed.

As they departed, the German ships fired on lifeboats.
