Two men taken prisoner in Northern Virginia confessed to Union officers that they had just returned from Richmond, where they had taken a large group of locally-owned enslaved people to prevent losing them under the Emancipation Act.
'By January 1st next year, there will be no Negroes left in this entire region,’ the men said.
The US Navy Department has let it be known that it would pay $500,000 for the Confederate raiding ship Alabama and $300,000 if the vessel is destroyed.
Rumors swirl that a French armada bearing 50,000 men which is presently en route to Mexico will be diverted to New Orleans to confront Union General Butler, the governing military authority, over his confiscation of property of local residents held in safe-keeping by the French consulate there.
