It came at the end of a three-month lecture tour across Canada and the US.

Nearly everyone Churchill had met on the tour was invested in the stock market.

“The housemaid who makes your bed is a stockholder on margin.

Workmen of every class, brain or hand, the chauffeur, the tram conductor, the railway man, the waiter,

…all have their open accounts, and so very often have their wives,” he’d later write.

Churchill’s tour had been organized by financier Bernard Baruch, who introduced him to the titans of American finance.

And the tour took him to California, where, as the guest of William Randolph Hearst, he met successful Hollywood stars.

These people were navigating a path to great wealth.
