On the Western Front, a combined force of French and Belgian troops has achieved a tactical success in Flanders, a region of northern Belgium.
There, they captured the strategic Merckem Peninsula, a swampy area near the town of Ypres which is marked by streams and canals.
[Ed: The fight in this area is part of the larger Battle of Passchendaele, a major engagement of the war in which Canadian troops will play the key role.]
The French and Belgian soldiers fought through neck-deep water in places to storm German trench lines and defenses.
But they succeeded in capturing several villages and taking many German prisoners.
