The British Foreign Minister has informed the Lincoln Administration of a plot devised by Confederate asylum-seekers in Canada to seize a Lake Erie steamship and rescue Confederate officers now imprisoned on Johnson’s Island, in Sandusky Bay, Ohio.
Two thousand rebels are imprisoned there and many are Confederate officers seized in the July battle at Gettysburg.
The plot includes a plan to burn Buffalo, New York, as well as other Lake Erie cities.
