Germany has rejected the offer of Belgium and the Netherlands to mediate a peaceful end to the European war, claiming Britain has already rejected the offer.
Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands and King Leopold III of Belgium, both neutrals, had tendered their offer of mediation to Germany, France and Britain a week ago in large part to prevent their own countries from being drawn into the conflict.

A British destroyer hit a mine near the British coast and sank yesterday, becoming the fifth British naval vessel lost in the war.
