White willow. The most important components of willows are ferolic glycosides and, within them, salicin, which is found mainly in the bark and leaves. On contact with water, salicin splits into saligelin and glucose. When this saligelin is oxidized, it gives rise to salicylic acid, which is the base of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin).
