What better way to celebrate International Pi (π) Day on March 14, than to sample some locally made pies? In today's Feast, we meet the owner of "Funny Pig" a delightful shop in Taipei that specializes in both sweet and savory pies in the shape of a heart!
Owner Raymond Huang started the business after his daughter (who was six at the time) made a birthday wish that her father would make her something delicious for her birthday the following year. He ended up making her a savory corn and tuna pie (like a quiche). And even though he burnt the pie, his daughter proclaimed it the "best pie in the world!"
Today, Raymond Huang's daughter is already 20 years old, and his small business in Taipei is cranking out a whole line of pies featuring local ingredients. You'll find everything from locally sourced mushrooms, to smoked duck from Ilan, and strawberries from Hsinchu. And those are just the local ingredients! The Funny Pig creations also feature imported flour, butter, and even Italian balsamic vinegar.
Tune in to today's Feast to hear more of the Funny Pig story, and Ellen Chu's reaction when she samples the pies.
