Beach-goers at Piha are being forced to defecate in the sand dunes, because the public toilets are closing before many head home.

Residents say that each night security closes the toilet at about eight o'clock, a time when many families are getting ready to watch the sunset.

That's when the trouble begins, as residents say it leaves people with no choice but to relieve themselves in nature.
